Mythologie will have it, that the first beauty contest took place in Anatolia.
Zeus commissioned the beautiful and noble shepherd Paris to choose the most beautiful woman in the world. He gave him an apple made of gold, which Paris should present to the prettiest woman. The three most beautifuk goddosses entered the competition: Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
The legend tells us, that before the beauty contest Aphrodite went to a river in the Troas-valley not far from Didim to wash her hair in it. This she did to redden her hair to please Paris, because the river was red. In Mythology it was called "Ksantos" ( red river).
Fallowing the Mythology Aphrodite was rewarwed the golden apple ba Paris as the most beautiful goddess in the world.
